General:
Perennial herb from long creeping rhizomes; stems erect, 10-30 cm tall.

Leaves:
Located on the lower part of the stem, flat, stiff, lacking complete cross-walls.

Flowers:
Inflorescence of 1 to 6, terminal heads of 3 to 7 flowers, the flowers lacking bractlets; perianth segments brown, largely translucent-margined, 3-4 mm long, egg-shaped, pointed; stamens 6; anthers 0.9-1.4 mm long, about equal to the filaments; lowest bracts leaflike, longer than the flowers, upper bracts awnlike and shorter than the inflorescence.

Fruits:
Capsules, egg-shaped, notched, equal to or slightly longer than the perianth segments, dark brown; seeds barrel-shaped, about 0.3 mm long, lacking tail-like appendages.

Notes:
The habit of this species is similar to J. falcatus. The most reliable identification character is the shape and size of seeds.
